Steven Woolfe, UKIP Migration spokesman commented:
"By way of this decision, the Mayor of Calais will turn her town's migrant problem into one of industrial proportions.
“A recent SKY TV report by Ross Kemp showed that thousands of trucks a day enter the UK from Calais. 400 attempts everyday of migrants trying to get through the UK funded 11 mile fence and into the channel tunnel are recorded. Thousands and thousands of migrants attempt to get into the port, recently using 'flash mob' tactics to storm ferries bound for Britain. Last year there were 19,000 attempts to get into UK, a 60% increase on year before. It is estimated that 15-20 migrants successfully make it to the UK everyday illegally from the town.
“This is a problem that doesn't need industrial logic applied to it but common sense. Building yet another staging area in Calais to accommodate asylum seeking migrants as a solution for those who should have their cases processed in the first country in Europe in which they landed, is both self-deceiving and counterproductive.
"Building more transit camps in Calais for migrants who want to illegally enter Britain is not the answer to stemming the flows of people across the European continent. France needs to tackle its immigration problem at its borders - particularly the south eastern corridor from Italy, which is travelled by many migrants from North Africa who have made it to mainland Europe. The sort of centre being opened in Calais acts as a magnet for more hopeful migrants who think the UK's streets are paved with gold and puts even more pressure on France's stretched police resources"
