"Turkey's application for EU membership should be a completely separate issue to encouraging them to play a responsible part in dealing with migrants who pass through their territory. The €3 billion of EU funding to Turkey shouldn’t be used as an inducement to make Turkish President Recip Tayyip Erdoğan stop turning the misery of migrants into a mini-industry for his coastal ports. He should fulfil his international obligations anyway. In the chess board negotiations that the EU is always having with this NATO member, Erdoğan has started to use poor migrants as pawns to milk EU taxpayers. The EU Commission and Council are suckers for falling for it."
