Trouble brewing in Calais as unofficial 'squatter camp' becomes "a ghetto, a thriving community and staging post for getting to the UK."
Friday 12 June 2015, Port of Calais, France. Steven is the first British politician to visit the unofficial migrant camp which growing numbers of economic migrants are building adjacent to the French authorities ‘official one’, after they have successfully completed Mediterranean crossings and travelled across Europe. Steven was also the first UK politician to visit that 'official' EU funded Calais staging post in January of this year (see here). There were no migrants claiming political asylum during this visit. Neither have those we saw claimed asylum in the first country in Europe in which they landed as they are supposed to if they want this status. They are determined people who want to work and live in the UK. As the population grows in this squatter camp, their desperation becomes greater. The well documented disruptive effects of the economic migrants on the Port of Calais, who use this camp as a base to hide in transport coming to Britain, is set to get worse. Check out this video blog to experience a flavour of what Steven found…
